Job Description: Engineer Manager
The Engineering Manager (EM) is a senior leadership role responsible for execution
excellence, people leadership, and delivery predictability across multiple engineering teams
working on our EMR/EHR healthcare product suite.
This role sits at the intersection of technology delivery, people management, and
cross-functional alignment. The EM ensures that engineering teams deliver secure,
scalable, compliant, and high-quality healthcare software, while building strong teams,
developing leaders, and maintaining sustainable delivery velocity.
The EM does not replace the CTO’s strategic or architectural ownership, nor the Technical
Team Lead’s hands-on technical leadership. Instead, the EM ensures that strategy becomes
execution, teams are healthy and productive, and delivery outcomes are reliable.
Key Responsibilities
1. Engineering Delivery & Execution
- Own end-to-end execution of engineering work across multiple squads, ensuring delivery against roadmap commitments.
- Oversee sprint execution, capacity planning, throughput, and delivery predictability.
- Monitor and proactively manage risks, dependencies, and delivery bottlenecks.
- Ensure engineering commitments align with product priorities, release timelines, and compliance requirements.
- Act as the first escalation point for delivery delays, blockers, or cross-team dependencies.
2. People Management & Leadership
- Directly manage Technical Team Leads and indirectly manage 30+ engineers.
- Conduct 1:1s, performance reviews, goal setting, coaching, and development planning.
- Own performance management, including improvement plans, growth tracking, and career progression.
- Identify, develop, and retain future technical and people leaders.
- Ensure fair, consistent, and objective performance evaluations across teams.
3. Team Structure, Hiring & Scaling
- Lead engineering hiring plans in alignment with roadmap and business growth.
- Partner with HR and CTO on workforce planning, team design, and succession planning.
- Actively participate in interviews and hiring decisions, ensuring quality and culture fit.
- Ensure onboarding effectiveness and fast ramp-up for new hires.
4. Technical Governance & Quality Oversight
- Enforce engineering standards, coding practices, and quality benchmarks across teams.
- Ensure adherence to security, privacy, and compliance standards relevant to healthcare (e.g., HIPAA-aligned practices).
- Review and ensure Definition of Done (DoD), testing standards, and release readiness are consistently applied.
- Partner with Technical Team Leads to maintain high technical quality without micromanaging implementation.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Product Management, QA, DevOps, Architecture, Analytics, and UI/UX.
- Partner with Product, Design, and Architecture to define delivery scope, technical approach, and resource allocation for initiatives.
- Ensure engineering teams are aligned with product vision, scope clarity, and release goals.
- Communicate engineering progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to leadership.
- Support smooth coordination with Scrum Masters / PMO on agile execution and process health.
6. Agile & Delivery Excellence
- Monitor and improve velocity, predictability, and delivery metrics.
- Ensure agile ceremonies are effective (without owning facilitation).
- Identify systemic issues impacting delivery and drive process improvements.
- Use data to guide decisions rather than anecdotal evidence.
7. Culture, Engagement & Accountability
- Drive a culture of ownership, accountability, psychological safety, and continuous improvement.
- Reinforce company values and engineering culture across teams.
- Address team health issues early and decisively.
What This Role Is NOT
- Primary system architect (CTO owns architecture)
- Daily coding role (hands-on coding is limited and situational)
